Monash copyright indicators and statements : for Monash publications, webpages and course materials.

Commonwealth copyright warning notices

These notices are to be displayed with course materials containing third-party content copied into electronic format and/or put online in reliance on Parts VA or VB of the Copyright Act.

The notices (or exact same text thereof) have to be displayed before or at the same time as the content is accessed.

  • Part VA (Screenrights licensed off-air broadcast content; RTF)
  • Part VB (CAL licensed published text and images; RTF)

Exterior label for disks featuring TV and radio (broadcast) recordings: Under the Part VA Screenrights licence, the physical copies (disks or tapes) of all off-air broadcast recordings, or the containers in which they are kept, are to be labeled with the following:

Made for Monash University under Part VA of the Copyright Act 1968.

  • TVNews database available through the library (this database of Australian broadcast news is made available to Screenrights licence holders)
  • ABC TV documentaries for download - under the Screenrights licence documentaries like this can be downloaded and used for educational purposes (made available in MUSO for example or on a DVD disk for inclusion in the library or sent directly to students). Just ensure the VA warning notice is appropriately displayed! Site offers a choice of MP4 or WMV file type (link added Nov 2008)
  • Podcasts for download from SBS - includes foreign language news broadcasts, some documentaries, some current affairs (Insight) etc.
  • Podcasts from Nine News - audio and video podcast versions of the Nine network news service; direct to iPod or Mp3 player using iTunes or web browser to download - follow the instructions on the page in the above link.
  • BBC podcast directory for BBC radio programs (the UK is a signatory to the WIPO/ Rome convention - refer to the advice about the Screenrights licence and broadcast content from international sources on this copyright site's Teaching page> Using sound and vision)

Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) : The AustLII website is a joint facility of UTS and UNSW Faculties of Law. It provides access to legislation and cases.

Australian Copyright Council (ACC): The ACC is an independent non-profit organisation that provides information and advice about copyright. Their site includes information sheets, lists of publications, contact details, links, news and a seminar schedule.

Australian Digital Alliance (ADA) :The ADA is a non-profit coalition of public and private sector interests formed to promote balanced copyright law and provide an effective voice for a public interest perspective in the copyright debate.

Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Copyright Service: The ALIA copyright service provides advice and information relevant to the library and information sector for ALIA members, as well as information for the general public.

Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) :APRA collects and distributes royalties for musical composers, music publishers and song writers. The website includes information about copyright and music and how to apply for music licences.

Copyright Law Review Committee (CLRC) :The CLRC website contains information about the work of the CLRC, which acts as a specialist advisory body to report to the Government on specific copyright law issues as required. The website makes available full text CLRC reports, and submissions where permissible.

Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Limited :PPCA is a copyright collecting society for musical performers and recording companies. The website includes information about music and copyright and how to apply for licences to play or broadcast recorded music as well as licences to use recorded music in an online environment.

Screenrights: Screenrights collects and distributes royalties for producers, distributors, script writers, music copyright owners, rights owners in artistic works and sound recordings and other rights holders in film and television. Screenrights is the designated collecting society for the Part VA educational statutory licence. The site includes the teaching resource EnhanceTV.

Copyright Agency Limited CAL: CAL is a collecting society operating on behalf of publishers and authors and is the agency which administers the Part VB statutory licence covering educational use of text and graphical content.

QUT off-air recording service (Monash staff may make requests for copies of off-air broadcasts to QUT's recording service as they function as a Screenrights Education Resource Centre for all Screenrights licence holders)

Tape Services Online :Tape Services Online is a website that provides services for educational institutions such as Monash University who operate under a Screenrights licence arrangement. Tape Services Online is a Screenrights Education Resource Centre, provided by the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services. The website includes an online catalogue of television programs and films that have been taped under the Screenrights licence. Copies are available for purchase.

Vi$copy :Vi$copy collects and distributes royalties for Australian and international visual artists. The Vi$copy website contains an image gallery of members' works that can be licensed and downloaded for a fee.

Creative Commons :Creative Commons provides an alternative way of licensing your own copyright material to others for educational use. It also provides access to material that others have made freely available for educational use.
